I like to think of myself as a coffee abomination. Made some French press, threw it in the fridge for tomorrow. EZ cold brew.

You think you’re an abomination. I will make a pot of folgers one morning, leave it out all day and have a large glass of lukewarm coffee the next morning. (although fresh or not, it’s almost always with a sweetener and some manner of creamer)
On the other hand, I started drinking coffee because it was cheaper, and likely less unhealthy, than diet Mt Dew in the morning so...

BTW, The Aeropress is amazing. I bought the first one on a lark and it’s incredible. Every house has at least two in it... I’m like the Johnny Appleseed of Aeropress.

I need coffee to wake me up, but I’ve got to be awake already to do all that?

I use the same method as the chemist. Unless I have Nespresso pods at which time I drink small cups of coffee until I am out of pods.

This is what happens when you make
scientists stay at home and they get to tinkering...

Been rocking the aeropress for the past 7 years and I’ve been quite happy. I don’t let the grounds sit for that long, only about 30 seconds with some stirring.

I like a good cup of coffee as much as the next person, but I cut my teeth on G.I. coffee made in a submarine engine room, the water was likely waste from the reactor plant. Yum.
Also, fun fact, the engine room coffee maker was wired up as a piece of vital electrical gear. Like, plant down, boat sinking out, about to die... coffee maker still percolating.

I’d have thought the coffee on a submarine would be good coffee. So what does that mean as far as what you look for in a cup of coffee nowadays?
Was the coffee maker wired up that way by original design or was it a hack?

Is that why it took your appendix a month to rot?

It was by design... I’m sure the Navy spec’d it that way. And the coffee wasn’t terrible, but it certainly wasn’t anything special. Most “coffee people” I know hate Folgers. I don’t mind it. And Id place boat coffee equal or slightly below. So take that for what its worth.
As far as what I look for in a cup of coffee... well, I like to gaze at it, inhale the aroma, savor it and ask myself... is this coffee? Is it instant coffee? Could this pass for coffee to someone unfamiliar with coffee?
If the answer to any of those questions is yes, I drink it.

Probably.
That and all the alcohol.

The tequila and lime in my glass currently predicts that to be true

Hey I own that same french press, I drink far to much coffee to spend that time playing chemistry with it.
Kettle water is far superior to microwaved water though.

Navy style is burnt on the burner for a few hours, if nobody drank last pot from previous watch it would get topped off and mixed in with the new "fresh" pot. Also, foldgers? Dunkin brand has bags ready for consumption just saying.

Heres how you make good coffee. Maybe theyll pay me since ive been buying for almost 35 years!

Scientists also created the chemex coffee carafe, my guess is they also invented the aero press to make their coffee faster. I use a real espresso machine. 0-coffee in less than 5 minutes, most of that time is warming up the water.

Percolate it.

Ok, coffee aside, what is that from? Johnny Socko and his giant robot? Ultra man? It’s triggering some repressed memory of my youth.

I drank quite a bit of percolated Folgers in the Army. It shocks me that submarine coffee was but middling.

What, is it moister?

Now we did have a guy who’s wife worked at a Starbucks and she would get us some good stuff from time to time. But a few pounds doesn’t last long when you’re making a couple pots on every 6 hour watch. We did some experiments mixing it with the GI stuff to stretch it out. If Im honest, Im not crazy about Starbucks, so it didn’t make much of a difference to me.
Best coffee I had was from this guy my wife worked with. She works for the gov and was working with this guy from State Dept. who knew some people at the Ethiopian embassy and this one guys son ran a coffee farm and used to ship beans direct. We were getting that for a while and holy smokes was it good. But my wife and him both ended up getting transferred to different units, lost touch, whatever. Aldi gets some good stuff from time to time, but they lack brand permanemce so every time I find something I like, they end up replacing it with a different brand.

I like good coffee but I don’t get tedious about it. In my 20’s and 30’s I worked in lkaces where the coffee was in those foil packs..it was free so it was good. My only gripe is when the coffee is too weak, other than that...

So if you microwave the water, give it a stir, introduce a thermometer, you get a uniformly heated quantity of water.

My Dad always drank his coffee black, made in some old percolator, and drank it in his old Navy mug. He said back in the day (Korean War) on his ship it was only black coffee, and you had to use your shaving mug. My brother still has the mug....looks something like this.

That is a great story, and very cool that you all still have his old mug. The coffee mugs on the boat still look a lot like that, although now they keep them in the galley and they are just for coffee use.

Additional little side note: I myself drink coffee with just a little half-n-half, as well as cappuccino. I love all kinds of coffee, b ut I definitely need that little bit of cream or milk. A few years ago when my Dad passed, we had a long night of waiting at the hospital. Around 4 AM I left to go home to get 2 hours of sleep before returning to the hospital. After 90 min of sleep, I took a shower and went downstairs to make coffee. Sure enough, there was no half-n-half. I probably should have taken the hint and drank it black, but I can’t. I drove down to the store and bought some, came back, opened the container and.... it was pure sour. No good, even though the expiration date was a month out . I’ve never in my life had a bad container of unopened half/half or cream. Ever.
Now, I don’t really believe in ghosts or spirits or whatever, but I’m pretty fucking sure my Dad was standing behind me, with his Navy cup, laughing his ass off making sure I drank black coffee that morning.
(as you can tell, I can’t see a cup of black coffee without thinking of my Dad or DD-657, the Destroyer he was on. Thank you for your service!)
